As you may remember, the first half of the year we spent in anxious waiting for reaccreditation letter from the Ministry of Education with the permission to continue our work in adoption field in Russia. Five from ten regions where we work were shut down and other five continued adoptions struggling with many challenges. But the Foundation kept its work! These days only strengthened the authority of our agency as respectable and sincere people who can sacrifice their interests to the interests of children. This half-year report can prove it. We maintained 51 humanitarian projects:
As you can see, the majority of our projects and the biggest part of your donations were spent on repair projects and projects aimed at developing material recourses for orphanages. All orphanages in Russia are governmental based and some of them receive very small budget, insufficient to every-day needs. That is why the Foundation often supports repair works or purchasing clothes, food and other necessities.
In addition to our constant repair projects we managed to support seven medical projects and trainings for orphanage personnel.
For example, the target of the project "Let's protect children from hepatitis" in Miass Baby Home in Chelyabinsk region was to perform expensive high quality blood test for Hep infected children to distinguish viruses from maternal protective antibodies. Seven children were tested for Hepatitis by PCR test (polymerase chain reaction) and only two turned out to have the Hep B virus; others have only maternal protective antibodies. The child with Hep antibodies can be considered relatively healthy and live together with other children. Plus, this diagnosis makes them available for adoption.
The Roslavsky Special Boarding School in Smolensk region is specialized for children with hearing problems. The Foundation purchased up-to-date hearing aids and equipment for children at the orphanage what will help to improve orphans learning abilities and social adjustment.
Older children
Institutionalization syndrome is one of the most acute problems for orphanage graduates and inmates. We all know they are not prepared for the real life outside the orphanage; they have poor social skills and therefore can easily lost their way in adult life. According to the data of the General Prosecutor's Office, 15'000 people graduate from orphanage institutions in Russia annually. According to statistics, 5'000 of them become unemployed; 6'000 become homeless; 3'000 have criminal charges; 1'500 commit a suicide. Thus, it becomes obvious that it's not enough to provide orphanage inmates with food and clothes, it's even more important to teach them social skills and abilities necessary for every person. That is why CHI Foundation always supports projects aimed at development older children social skills and their preparation for future life. These are the following projects: "Education by Nature" in Kemerovo Region, "Summer tent camp" in Tver Region, "Hobby generation" in Tomsk Oblast.
The project "Hobby generation" is a long-term initiative realized by CHI Foundation together with the Department of Education of Tomsk region. Our objective was to teach children and teenagers creative communication with peers and adults and to develop their motivation to self-study and self-actualization at summer camp in Tomsk region.
CHI Foundation also took part in different All-Russia events such as "Golden Hart" rewards ceremony were Executive Director of CHI Dwyatt Gantt presented 11 passes to famous Russia summer camp to the Rodinykh family for their adopted children.
We all feel very blessed to help hundreds and hundreds of orphans. We can do even more with your help. Thanks to everyone who donated so generously! Together we can make a difference! CHI Foundation would appreciate any contribution to our projects.
You may send your check to CHI Main office 9229 Lackland Road St. Louis, Missouri, 63114-5412 or donate online through "networkforgood".
